Welcome to Israel! After assistance with passport control and baggage claim, your journey begins along the Mediterranean coast. The first stop will be Caesarea, once a magnificent Roman metropolis. Here you can enjoy the modern visitor center and walk among the impressive remains of Herod’s grand harbor and theaters. If time allows, continue to the Atlit Detainee Camp, where during the 1940s the British imprisoned Jewish immigrants seeking to reach the Land of Israel. This poignant site tells the story of courage and persistence during the struggle for Jewish independence.
Start the day in Safed, once a major center of Kabbalah philosophy and today a haven for Jewish artists. Stroll its narrow lanes filled with colorful galleries and visit the historic Ha’ari HaKadosh Synagogue and where Rabbi Yosef Karo compiled the Shulchan Aruch. Nearby, at Meiron, lies the Tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (Rashbi), one of the most revered rabbis in Jewish history. Continue the drive along Israel’s northern frontier near Lebanon, where you will gain perspective on the country’s security challenges. End the day at the beautifully preserved ancient synagogue of Bar’am, a rare glimpse into Jewish life in late antiquity.
Travel up into the Golan Heights and pause at Mount Bental, where sweeping views extend across northern Israel and into Syria. Continue to the Valley of Tears, the site of a legendary 1973 battle where a small Israeli tank force held back a massive Syrian advance. For added adventure, enjoy an ATV ride along the border while appreciating the rugged beauty and geopolitics of the region. Pause for a memorable Druze lunch and warm village hospitality, then continue to Gamla. Here, two thousand years ago, Jewish defenders fell in a fierce Roman assault. Today, the site blends ancient ruins, eagle nesting cliffs, and stunning views of the Sea of Galilee.
Begin the morning with an optional sail across the Sea of Galilee from Tiberias to Kibbutz Ginosar, whose museum presents well the Zionist history of the region. Continue to Magdala, where the remains of a first-century synagogue and its enigmatic decorated stone raise debates on ancient Jewish worship. An optional visit to Capernaum and its ancient synagogue adds further depth to the Jewish past in this region. In Tiberias, visit the Tomb of Maimonides and learn about archaeological discoveries possibly linked to the Sanhedrin. Driving south, pass by the Kinneret Cemetery, where the first pioneers of Jewish settlement and 2 famous poets are buried. Stop at Beit She’an for a traditional Israeli barbecue lunch and a tour of the city’s impressive Roman ruins. By evening, reach Jerusalem and ascend to the Mount of Olives. From its breathtaking viewpoint, greet the city with a heartfelt “Shehecheyanu” blessing.
Step into the City of David, where Jerusalem’s earliest remains reveal its biblical past. Begin with a 3D introduction at the visitor center, then descend into the ancient water system. Walk through Hezekiah’s Tunnel, where cool spring water still flows, and emerge at the Pool of Siloam. From there, ascend through the Herodian drainage channel to the Southern Wall Archaeological Park, where the steps and streets of the Temple period remain visible. At its Davidson Center, exhibitions bring Jerusalem’s sacred heritage to life. After lunch in the Jewish Quarter, explore landmarks such as the Hurva Synagogue and the Burnt House, while browsing Judaica in the Cardo. Conclude the day at the Western Wall Plaza, joining pilgrims in prayer at this sacred site. In the evening, you may also enjoy the Tower of David Night Spectacular.
Begin the morning with an ascent to the Temple Mount, reviewing the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque while considering the remains that may reflect the Second Temple period. Continue underground for a guided group tour of the Western Wall Tunnels, where massive stone foundations reveal the scale of Herod’s Temple. Return to the Western Wall Plaza and consider the virtual Second Temple tour that reconstructs the Temple as it once stood. Later, drive south to Gush Etzion and experience training at an anti-terror facility, practicing Krav Maga techniques and even some live shooting. Conclude the day at Herodium, Herod’s desert palace, where archaeologists discovered his tomb and where Jewish rebels later made their final stand.
Head into the desert with a fun stop at the Sea Level sign for photos and perhaps a short camel ride. Ascend the ancient fortress of Masada, where King Herod’s palaces overlook the stark desert and where Jewish rebels made their final heroic stand against Rome. After touring the site, enjoy an authentic kibbutz lunch at Ein Gedi and stroll through its renowned botanical gardens. Alternatively, spend time at a Dead Sea resort, floating in the mineral-rich waters and relaxing by the beach. On the return journey, pause at Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. If time allows, learn about the revival of biblical blue dye at the Tekhelet Factory.
Travel into the gentle hills of the Shephela, where biblical stories and modern history intertwine. From the summit of Tel Azekah, reflect on the story of David and Goliath and its possible setting in the valley below. Continue to Tel Lachish, where Assyrian forces destroyed the city in 701 BCE, leaving dramatic evidence of the conquest. Next, drive along the historic Burma Road, recalling the desperate 1948 battle to break through to Jerusalem with vital supplies. If time permits, conclude with a visit to the 1948 Secret Bullet Factory (Machon Ayalon), a hidden underground plant that supplied the Jewish fighters of the Independence War.
Spend the final day in Israel exploring the nation’s vibrant modern heart. Begin at Independence Hall on Rothschild Boulevard, where David Ben-Gurion declared the birth of the State of Israel. Continue along Rothschild Boulevard to learn how Tel Aviv developed from sand dunes into a thriving city. Next, head to Jaffa, whose rich history stretches back to antiquity, and enjoy its winding alleys and contemporary art galleries. Pause in the lively Flea Market for lunch and perhaps a unique vintage find. Conclude at Rabin Square, where the Prime Minister was assassinated in 1995, an event that deeply shaped Israel’s recent history. Time permitting, add a visit to the Palmach Museum, the ANU Museum of the Jewish People, or experience the thrill of an IAF fighter jet simulator at “The Squadron”.
This day is dedicated to the Gaza Envelope, focusing on the Hamas terror attack of October 7, 2023. Begin at Yad Mordechai, where kibbutz defenders once stood against the Egyptian army in 1948 and again against the Hamas attack on October 7. Continue to Netiv Ha’Asara, where a moving memorial park honors twenty victims of the October 7 massacre, marked by a colossal Israeli flag visible from Gaza. Drive further to the Be’eri Lookout, offering a distant but sobering view of Kibbutz Be’eri, one of the hardest-hit communities on that tragic day. Nearby, visit the Nova Festival site, where a joyful music gathering turned into a horrific massacre, now a site of mourning.
Continue to the Shuva Brothers outpost, where volunteers welcome visitors, offer soldiers a place of rest, and share stories of support during wartime. Nearby, the Burnt Cars Display powerfully illustrates the scale of destruction from the attack, preserving the remains of vehicles used by victims fleeing for their lives. End the day in Sderot, a city long scarred by rocket fire and terror, with a stop at the Sderot Police Station Memorial, where fierce battles took place on October 7.
