Day 1 – History, Memory, and the Desert Frontier
Your journey begins as you drive south from Tel Aviv into the western Negev, a region shaped by turbulent history of conflict. The first stop is Kibbutz Yad Mordechai, where you will learn about the battles 1948 War of Independence and again on October 2023.
Next, you will drive pass by Kibbutz Be’eri, one of the hardest-hit communities in the October 7th attacks. While access inside is restricted, you view the kibbutz from a respectful distance, reflecting on both tragedy and resilience. A short drive away lies the Nova Music Festival Memorial, a moving tribute to the young lives lost, where personal stories and tributes give a voice to those remembered.
The journey continues into the Negev Desert with a visit to Ben-Gurion’s Desert Hut and Tomb at Sde Boker, a modest home reflecting Israel’s founding father’s dream. From here, you drive on to Mizpe Ramon, where the dramatic Ramon Crater Visitors Center introduces you to the geology and wildlife of the world’s largest erosion crater.
