Located in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, Beit Pelugot HaKotel is a compelling museum dedicated to a gripping and often overlooked chapter of the British Mandate era. It tells the story of the Western Wall Platoon, a group of brave Betar youth who risked everything to reclaim Jewish sovereignty at the Kotel.

A Legacy of Defiance

Following the 1929 riots, British authorities imposed harsh restrictions on Jewish prayer, famously banning the sounding of the Shofar. From 1930 until the state’s founding in 1948, these young volunteers defied the ban every Yom Kippur, smuggling Shofars past British guards to ensure the holy day ended with a blast of freedom. In 1937, the Platoon was officially formed to protect Jewish residents and restore security to the Jewish Quarter. Their bold actions against both the British Mandate and hostile neighbors eventually laid the groundwork for the Irgun.

The Experience

Eighty years after the British shuttered the building, the site has been reopened as a state-of-the-art museum. The visit centers on a dramatic 35-minute cinematic presentation that immerses guests in the danger and ideology of the underground struggle. Visitors can explore the very rooms where these volunteers lived and planned their daring missions, witnessing the immense courage it took to maintain Jewish traditions under the constant threat of imprisonment or death. This site offers a powerful look at the young dreamers who fought to keep the Jewish spark alive in Jerusalem’s Old City.

A visit to Beit Plugot Hakotel can be integrated in a day tour of Jerusalem.
