Two Coastal Charms
Israel’s coastline is dotted by many points of beauty and interest. The sandy Mediterranean beaches were settled from prehistoric times and witnessed many historical events. This specially designed tour will take you along the coast north of Tel-Aviv and combine spectacular archaeological and historical sites with some great views between Caesarea and Haifa.
From the ancient port, walk past the Hippodrome where chariot races once thrilled Roman spectators. Continue through the impressive Roman-era bathhouse complex, with its intricate heating systems. Arrive at Herod’s palace, dramatically positioned on a promontory above the sea. Here, an underground complex may mark the prison where Paul was held before his journey to Rome. Conclude with a walk through Caesarea’s grand Roman theatre, still echoing with the voices of ancient performances.
Enjoy a scenic ride up the forested Carmel slopes, with sweeping views of the Mediterranean and Galilee hills. Arrive at Muhraka, a hilltop site revered in Christian tradition. Here, Elijah confronted the prophets of Ba’al in a dramatic biblical showdown. His victory provoked the wrath of Queen Jezebel, forcing Elijah to flee into the wilderness. The modern Carmelite monastery at Muhraka offers stunning vistas across the Jezreel Valley and Mount Tabor.
Continue driving along the Carmel ridge, where scenic viewpoints reveal both the Mediterranean coastline and the distant hills of Galilee. Pass through charming Druze villages, while your guide will share insights about this unique religious minority and its strong ties with Israel. Optionally, stop to stroll through their main market, known for its inviting restaurants and shops selling beautiful house décor items.
For those interested, continue to the Stella Maris Monastery on the pinnacle of Mount Carmel. Local tradition holds that the prophet Elijah once hid in this area while fleeing the wrath of Queen Jezebel. Later, it is also believed that the Holy Family found refuge here during their flight from King Herod. The monastery’s church is adorned with beautiful frescoes, and the serene setting invites quiet reflection.
Descend into Haifa’s German Colony, established by German Christians in the 19th century. Explore tree-lined streets, historic buildings, and lively cafés. This area now serves as a vibrant cultural hub, offering opportunities for a short break, a coffee, or casual exploration before concluding the tour.
