Footsteps of Jesus Around the Sea of Galilee
This private two-day journey through the Galilee traces the heart of the Galilee. Rolling hills, ancient roads, and quaint villages form the living backdrop of the Scriptures. The tour weaves together biblical texts, archaeology, and geography, providing a spiritual reflection while revealing how faith unfolds within real historical settings.
The tour begins at Megiddo, one of the most important cities of the ancient biblical world. Strategically positioned above key trade routes, Megiddo controlled movement between Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Levant. Your guide will explain its repeated appearance in the Old Testament and its symbolic association with Armageddon. Excavated city gates, palaces, and massive water systems reveal sophisticated engineering from biblical periods. Standing atop the mound also offers sweeping views of the Plains of Armageddon, Mount Tabor, and Nazareth.
Continue to Nazareth, where Jesus spent most of his early life. Its main attraction, the Basilica of the Annunciation, stands above the traditional site of the angel Gabriel’s message to Mary. The guide will highlight archaeological remains of first century that could be attributed to the holy family and Jesus’ Childhood. Nearby, the Synagogue-Church offers a glimpse to where Jesus studied and preached before rejects in his own hometown. Nazareth reveals how God’s redemptive story began in humility, far from political centers.
Continue to Cana, remembered as the setting of Jesus’ first recorded miracle – transforming water into wine during a wedding feast. The guide will reflect on the miracle and review the main finds at the site, including a unique stone vessel. Together with Nazareth, Cana marks the heart of Christian devotion in the Galilee. The day concludes with a scenic drive toward the Sea of Galilee.
Begin the morning at the Mount of Beatitudes overlooking the Sea of Galilee. This tranquil hillside recalls the Sermon on the Mount and Christ’s foundational teachings. Your guide will read selected passages that echo across the open landscape, reflecting the revolutionary messages of Jesus on compassion and redemption. He will also lead you through the site’s unique octagonal church and explain its special architectural design. The setting invites reflection on humility, mercy, and discipleship.
Continue to Capernaum, often called the town of Jesus during his Galilean ministry. Explore the remains of a large ancient synagogue built over earlier foundations. Nearby stands the site traditionally identified as the house of Peter. Admiring the finds, the guide will connect the miracles, healings, and teachings recorded in the Gospels to these remains. Nearby, you may consider having lunch in a local fish restaurant.
After lunch, visit the “Boat of Galilee”, a 2,000 year-old fishing vessel found near a Kibbutz. Next, experience the Sea of Galilee from the water aboard a wooden boat replicating the ancient find. This sail recalls the daily life of fishermen called by Jesus to follow him, and his calming of a storm and walking on water. The shoreline and hills appear much as they did two thousand years ago, and the stillness of the lake creates a space for prayer and quiet meditation.
End the tour at Magdala, the hometown of Mary Magdalene. Excavations here revealed remarkably preserved finds, including a rare first-century synagogue. The guide will explain Magdala’s role as a thriving fishing and commercial center until its destruction by the Romans in 67 AD. Walking its streets connects Gospel figures with tangible historical settings vividly described by the first-century historian Josephus.
If time permits, on the way back, stop at Caesarea Maritima, the grand Roman port city built by Herod the Great. Massive harbors, theaters, and streets reveal Roman power and ambition. The guide will review its rich history, and recount on how the ministries of Peter and Paul are connected to this city.
